Caprini score
0
Lowest risk
Early and frequent ambulation.
2005 Caprini risk assessment model. Education only — prophylaxis decisions must follow local protocol, bleeding risk and senior review.
The Caprini risk assessment model estimates a surgical patient's risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) — deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism — by summing weighted risk factors, and guides the choice and intensity of thromboprophylaxis.
Each risk factor scores 1, 2, 3 or 5 points by severity (age, type of surgery, malignancy, prior VTE, thrombophilia and more). The total maps to a risk category from lowest to high risk.
Higher scores warrant more intensive prophylaxis — from early ambulation, to mechanical (intermittent pneumatic compression), to pharmacologic prophylaxis, often combined and sometimes extended in the highest-risk patients.
Education only — prophylaxis decisions must weigh bleeding risk and follow local protocol and senior review.
